DAVIT KIRIA: THE NEW KING OF KUNLUN
The morning after the night before is a sweet, sweet day for one Davit Kiria as the fearsome Georgian was last night crowned the new 70kg champion of Kickboxing's premier fight promotion, Kunlun.
The night started with Kiria facing off against hometown hero, Feng Xingli in the first semifinal of the evening and it was super-strong and intelligent Kiria who made the Chinese fighter pay dearly as he scored a third round TKO victory to seal his spot in the grand final.
His opponent for the showpiece finale was to be Moroccan warrior Marauon Toutouh who overcame stiff opposition in former Kunlun champion, Dzianis Zuev, a win coming via a majority points decision.
The final and both men were showing nerves of steels in the opening stanza and it was a battle of two hungry combatants looking to win their inaugural Kunlun tournament.
The fairytale ending came good for Kiria as his methodology of utilizing the power in his hands clearly worked in the eyes of four of the five ringside judges, with the fifth judge scoring the contest a draw. And with that Davit Kiria made a little bit of history to become the first ever Georgian fighter to win a prestigious Kunlun tournament.
The night's other main attraction on this stellar fight card was the Kunlun 8-man, one night tournament where Ukrainian powerhouse Roman Kryklia came away the victor after delicatly ploughing his way through the opposition to claim the Kunlun gold,
In his opening quarterfinal the Minsk based fighter squared off against Sovakina fighter Martin Pacas, in a one-sided contest that saw Roam seal a unanamous points victory. That lead him to take on Rade Opacic in the semifinals, and again it was Kryklia who came out all guns blazing and this time he needed less than two full rounds to dispatch of the Serbian fighter, a TKO victory saw him land his spot in the final.
The final, and the final saw Roman face off against a familiar foe, in that of Iranian fighter Iraj Azizpour, these two met in the final of a previous Kunlun tournament, on that occasion the Iranian bulldozed his way to victory.
It was a case of revenge this time around as the Ukrainian landed a barrage of heat-seeking punches to pretty much every part of the head and body of his brave opponent over the three rounds, scoring at least four counted knock-downs on his way to claim the Kunlun pot of gold.
