KUNLUN 71: Larsen and Moissev Reign Supreme

April 1, 2018

Sunday, April 1st: The weekend started out with 16 fighters dreaming of making the final 16 of the 2018 KunLun tournament.

Well, without getting too scientific: 14 hearts were broken and 2 men stood tall with their hopes and dreams intact — and now move on to the sweet 16.

Danish fighter Niclas Larsen and Russian warrior

Anatoliy Moiseev join last month’s winners, Yohann Drai from France and Australia’s Victor Nagbe as the first 4 boxers into the final 16.

Moissev faced off against Moroccan fighter Nordin Ben in the second semifinal of today’s group (C) clash. The Russian fighter prevailed over three hard fought rounds, taking the victory via a unanimous points decision.

In the final of today’s group (C) the steely Russian clashed with Chinese fighter Kong Lingfeng, who earlier in the day outscored stand-in fighter BoumHammed, in the opening semifinal of the group.

Anatoliy Moissev came, saw and conquered Kong via a first TKO — and with that crowning moment he sealed his spot in the coveted final 16.

Niclas Larsen for his part collided with current Lumpinee stadium middleweight champion, Noppagao from Thailand, in their semifinal clash in group (D).

It was an early finish for the ‘Danish Destroyer’ as he sent his Thai opponent crashing to the canvas with a perfectly timed flying knee. There was little hope of return for a dazed and confused Noppagao — and it Larsen who moved on to the final of group (D).

He clashed with Chinese fighter Tian Xin for the right to join group (C) winner Moiseev in final 16,  and it was a fairytale ending from an enchanting weekend for Niclas, who defeated Tian via a points decision.

The evening’s main event pitted the 2014 Kunlun champion against the tournaments 2016 runner-up: Dzianis Zuev from Belarus versus Jomthong Chuwattana were those two protagonists, respectively.

Jomthong was coming out of a very short lived retirement for this contest, whilst Zuev was looking to seal a wildcard entry into the final 16 of this years 70kg tournament.

It was to be Thai hero Jomthong’s night of revered glory as he took Zuev into deep waters,  and came out swimming stronger than his Belarusian opponent - eventually taking the win via a hard fought points decision.
